Authoritarian regimes and their allies systematically manipulate the public sphere, at home and abroad. At home, they do this to intimidate and silence dissenters, to distract from matters of public concern, and to mislead. Abroad, they do this to cloud the waters, manufacture the impression of widespread support, and to influence public opinion and policy.
In 2019, together with the late Jamal Khashoggi, we set out to investigate and uncover systemic platform manipulation, starting with Twitter. He died before he could fulfill this mission, but we have continued it in his name.
